The life of a busy student athlete prepared Shelbie to be the busy worker she is here at Make-A-Wish as the Operations & Outreach coordinator. Shelbie began as an intern here at Make-A-Wish and did volunteer work for a year with the branch before in true Grease fashion they sang, “you’re the one that I want” and hired her on. This was music to Shelbie’s ear as this is her favorite movie ever and now, favorite job ever!
Shelbie knew Make-A-Wish would be her passion after watching the documentary Batkid and witnessing the impact that a positive experience can have on children going through great battles. If you scrolled through Netflix and wanted to find a documentary on Shelbie, however, you would have to head straight to the comedy section and find the option staring Mila Kunis, the star who although slightly less attractive than Shelbie, would play her.
A stand out moment during her Make-A-Wish career was Shelbie's first experience interviewing a child to determine their wish of choice. She distinctly remembers the positivity the family and child displayed despite all they were going through which made her and continues to make her fall in love with the hope and joy Make-A-Wish can provide.
For Shelbie, nothing makes her more joyful than seeing her family in California and cooking new foods! Actually, eating the food she cooks is her greatest joy and when there is no time for cooking she can be found picking up a Frontier cinnamon roll or green chile enchiladas. This Jill of all trades is such an asset to the New Mexico Make-A-Wish chapter and although she does not have a favorite super hero, you can bet she is ours!
